NOUN SAMPHOS: Pig Farmer

Noun Samphos is a 34 year old divorced mother of 4 children aged 3 to 16 years old. She became a land mine victim whilst farming on a small piece of land in Kampong Cham in 1990 and then became dependant on her cousin in order to survive.

When she was first approached about moving to Veal Thom she hesitated because she knew nothing about pig raising and returned back to Kampong Cham. However, she decided that she could no longer bear her previous way of living and moved back to Veal Thom in 2001.

Noun Samphos is now living happily with her children

At first it was very difficult for her and her family as they had to clear the land and build a house. She sold her land in Kampong Cham to raise money to buy a cow and food; she also made roofing materials to sell in the market. She then attended the success case replication (SCR) training and realized that she had the ability to raise pigs and produce rice wine.

Her business makes an average daily profit of 10,000 riel ($2.50). She says her life has changed more than she could imagine. Her children attend the local school and she no longer has to worry how she will provide for them.

Update on Noun Samphos

By November of 2006 Noun Somphos had become one of the richest villagers in Veal Thom. In addition to raising numerous pigs, she now also has a winemaking business.
